Record the context accurately
If a presentation or conversation includes a sales, income or profit statement, note who made it, when, which business format it concerned and the material provided. Do not round an informal statement into a more precise number or present your interpretation as a direct quote.
Ask how the statement relates to the current FDD and what written substantiation supports it. Financial-performance representations have specific disclosure requirements and limited exceptions; a franchise attorney can assess the actual circumstances.
Ask what the figure measures
Revenue, profit and personal income are different measures. A result may concern a selected group, company-owned locations, mature outlets or a particular period. Understanding the population and exclusions is essential before treating the information as relevant to a proposed location.
Do not place an event figure into a personal forecast without independent review. The fact that a statement was delivered in a public venue does not make it representative or applicable to your circumstances.
Keep the next step documentary
Request the complete current disclosure through an official channel and take the preserved material to advisers. Read any acknowledgement about what was said or received for accuracy. This guide provides a research response, not a finding that a named exhibitor has made an improper claim.
Put it on paper
- Preserve exact context and provided material.
- Ask about the measure, population and substantiation.
- Review the statement with independent counsel.
